Which Colour Saree for Diwali? What Actually Works Under Fairy Lights
A customer messaged us on WhatsApp recently with a photo of a saree and one question that made me smile.
“Shriya, will this look nice in the Diwali pictures?”
Not “is it nice?” Not “will it suit me?” The pictures.
Honestly, I think that's a very fair question.
You can spend hours choosing a saree, love how it looks when you try it on, and then see the photos later and wonder why the colour looks completely different. Fairy lights, diyas, warm indoor lighting and a room full of red and gold can change things quite a bit.
So if you're wondering what colour saree to wear for Diwali, here's my rule. Pick something with enough depth to hold its own under warm lighting, but still choose a colour that feels like you.
And if the whole room is wearing red, you really don't have to.
What colour saree should I wear for Diwali?
For an evening Diwali celebration, I'd start with deep red, wine, rich green, purple, black with gold, honey or gold.
The deeper colours usually hold up well once the lighting gets warm. If you don't want to go with the usual red-and-gold combination, green or purple can be a really nice change.
And this is where I'd personally make a slightly unpopular choice. I love one unexpected colour in a room full of reds.
Everyone looks at the same red-and-gold combinations every Diwali. There's nothing wrong with that, of course. But walking into the room in a rich green or purple saree can be much more memorable.

Why fairy lights change everything
This is something I notice every festive season.
Warm, low lighting brings out gold and warmer shades. Cooler and very pale colours can lose some of their character, though. Lavender and pastel blue, for example, can sometimes end up looking almost grey indoors.
One customer once sent us photos after wearing a pastel saree that looked beautiful when she tried it on. In every single evening picture, though, the colour looked grey.
That's why I think the camera deserves a little more attention than people usually give it.
You're going to see the saree in person for a few hours. The photographs might stay with you for years.
Which colours would I think twice about for an evening Diwali?
Lavender, pastel blue and very pale pinks. They're beautiful in daylight, but under warm yellow fairy lights they can turn muted or grey, and that's what shows up in the photographs. Save them for a daytime puja, where the light is on their side.
Does black work for Diwali?
Black is probably the colour I get asked about the most around festivals.
Some families avoid black during Diwali because they consider it inauspicious, while others don't have any issue with it. So I wouldn't say black is right or wrong. It really depends on what you're comfortable wearing at home.
If black is fine in your family, though, I think it looks beautiful in evening lighting. Especially when there's gold involved.
If you prefer a little more shine, you can also look at our Shimmer satin sarees for an evening Diwali look.
Something like Glimmering Shadows gives you that contrast without making the whole outfit feel too dark.
If you're still unsure because of family traditions, I'd go with what feels comfortable. A beautiful saree isn't worth spending the whole evening wondering whether your grandmother is judging you.
For more ideas on styling this colour, you can also read our black shimmer saree styling guide.

Rs. 2,499, with 77 in stock. The gold shimmer catches lamp light instead of going flat in photographs.
What if everyone else is wearing red?
First, don't panic.
Second, you don't have to compete with them.
If you've already decided on red, I'd play around with the shade instead. A deeper red can look completely different from a brighter or more traditional bridal red.
Our Blood Red Organza Saree is deeper than a typical bridal red, which is exactly why I'd consider it if you know half the room might also be wearing red.

Rs. 2,599, with 49 units in stock. This is a deeper red that still stands out even when half the room is wearing red.
You can also read our blood red saree styling guide if you want more ideas for wearing the shade.
But if you're standing in front of your wardrobe thinking, “I don't want to wear red again,” listen to that feeling.
Try green.
Try purple.
Try honey.
Or even black with gold, if that's comfortable for your family.
Which saree colours photograph well under fairy lights?
For Diwali, I'd stick to colours that still have some depth once the lights go warm.
Deep red is an easy choice. Wine has a little more depth, and if you want it, our Classic Plum-Maroon Banarasi shifts between maroon and plum in different light, though we only have it in small numbers. Green feels rich without being predictable. Purple can also look surprisingly good, especially if you keep the jewellery simple, and our Queen of the Night purple-pink organza saree is where I'd start.
Then there are the warmer shades. Honey and gold tones work beautifully with the golden light that comes with Diwali.

Which colour works for a daytime puja rather than an evening party?
This is where I'd change things slightly.
For a morning or daytime puja, I'd go for colours that feel lighter and warmer rather than reaching straight for heavy evening shimmer.
Honey is a lovely option because it works beautifully with traditional gold jewellery and still feels soft in daylight.
Our Queen Bee Honey Organza Saree is the kind of shade I'd consider if you want something festive without going straight for red. It's currently our bestseller.

Rs. 2,999, with 43 units in stock and our bestseller. A colour that works for a morning puja and an evening party with just a change of jewellery.
For evening parties, that's when I'd bring out the deeper colours, stronger shimmer and black-and-gold combinations.
Gold, honey and tissue for Diwali
There is something about gold under Diwali lights.
It doesn't need much help.
A rich gold saree can work for a family gathering, a dinner or even a card party, depending on how you style it. I'd keep the jewellery simple and let the saree do most of the work.
Our Molten Gold Tissue Saree is one I'd consider if you want that traditional festive feeling without going for a heavily embellished look.
It's Rs. 2,999, with 12 units currently in stock.
Warm shades are also useful because they work well in both daylight and lamp light. That's why honey and gold are two colours I keep coming back to for Diwali.
What about green and purple?
These are two colours I'd recommend if you want to move away from the usual Diwali red.
Green has that rich, festive feel without looking like you're trying too hard. Our Lush Aura Green and Gold Organza Saree is a good place to start.

Rs. 2,599, with 29 units in stock. Green photographs cleanly against marigold and diya light, which red and orange both fight with.
Purple can go in a completely different direction depending on the shade and how you style it. The trick with both colours is not to overdo the rest of the outfit.
If the saree already has enough colour and shine, you don't need a necklace, huge earrings, a dramatic blouse and everything else fighting for attention.
Let one thing lead.
Daytime puja or evening party?
For a daytime puja, I'd choose:
- Honey
- Gold
- Warm green
- Softer purple
- Lighter festive fabrics
For an evening party, I'd choose:
- Deep red
- Wine
- Black with gold
- Rich green
- Purple
- Shimmering gold
The answer really does change depending on the time of day. A saree that feels perfect at 10 in the morning can look completely different at 8 at night under fairy lights.
When should you order your Diwali saree?
Diwali is on 8 November this year, so please don't leave this until the last week.
I know. Every year we say this, and every year someone messages us at the last minute asking if something can reach them immediately.
If you've already decided what you want, I'd recommend ordering by the third week of October. That gives you room for delivery, blouse stitching and alterations, and that inevitable “maybe I'll change the blouse” moment, without it getting stressful.
And if you're buying for a family event, give yourself enough time to actually try the saree on before the big day.

FAQ
What colour saree should I wear for Diwali?
For an evening celebration, deep red, wine, green, purple, black with gold, honey and rich gold are all strong choices. For a daytime puja, warmer shades like honey and gold can work beautifully.
Does black work for Diwali?
It depends on your family's traditions. If your family is comfortable with black, a black-and-gold saree can look especially beautiful for an evening celebration.
Which saree colours photograph well under fairy lights?
Deep and warm colours tend to hold their character well under festive evening lighting. Red, wine, green, purple and black with gold are good options. Pale pastels can look muted under warm lights.
What should I wear for a daytime Diwali puja?
Choose something lighter and warmer than your evening party look. Honey, gold and warm green are good places to start.
Should I order my Diwali saree early?
Yes. Diwali is on 8 November, and I'd order by the third week of October so there's time for delivery, blouse stitching and styling before the celebration.
Diwali dressing doesn't have to mean choosing the most traditional colour in the room. Sometimes the best saree is simply the one you keep thinking about after everyone else has gone home.
